1. Decide On What You Want (Specifically)
You’ve got to have some specific goals in what it means to “get your life together.”
By keeping it vague, you’re ensuring that you never really truly succeed because what does it mean to get your life together, you know?
Instead, you need to pinpoint what exactly you want and what “getting your life together” means to you.
It could mean getting a new job, it could mean making a certain amount of money, it could be losing 20 pounds, it could be eating relatively healthy, or it could be a combination of these things.
But whatever it is, write it down, get specific, and then you’ll be able to have measureable goals on your quests to getting your life together!
2. Build Habits Slowly
If you’re going from someone who eats McDonalds every day and lays around the house, you’re not going to become a fitness guru in the finance industry the next day.
You’ve got to build new habits, but you need to do this in a sustainable way.
I love this habit tracker that’s downloadable and printable to keep you accountable.
Start with just a few habits you want to get started, and then only focus on those for a few weeks until you get it under control.
It can be something as easy to drinking a glass of water every morning you get up, or going for a 30 minute walk every day, or spending 1 hour per day working on your business idea.
Once you get that in your regular routine, you can then add more small habits and suddenly you’ll have changed your life and started actually good habits that will help you succeed.
3. Tell Others to Keep Yourself Accountable
When you’ve made a decision to get your life together, it can be helpful if you tell others to keep yourself accountable.
Obviously if you have slide into things like addiction, you may have a mentor assigned to you that will be able to help keep you accountable, but even if you’re just like “Man, I want to stop eating grilled cheese every day and binging 10 hours of Netflix,” it can be nice to tell a close friend or family member.
It helps us to stay on track because somebody else knows what we’re trying to achieve, and not only does that help from a bit of a “guilt trip” sense if we’re messing up (the external motivation factor is real!), but it can help to have someone cheering us on.
4. Celebrate Small Wins
If your only win today was that you made your bed when you got up, celebrate that small win.
Again, getting your life together is a journey, not a one day decision, and sometimes the wins will be small.
Celebrate them anyway.
They’ll build on each other, and the feel-goodness (not a word, but I like it) from the small wins will help you accomplish the bigger ones.
5. See a Therapist
There’s no denying that you can do as many bullet journals as your heart desires, but at the end of the day, a lot of the work that you need to do to get your life together has to do with your emotions and your ability to overcome obstacles.
Seeing a therapist when you’re trying to make big life changes is seriously one of the best things you can do.
Not only is it a great environment to feel supported and encouraged, but inevitably there will be things in your life that you’ll want to work through when you really start to uncover the motivation behind some of your bad habits.
I love online therapy like Talkspace, which allows you to have some consistency no matter where you are, if you’re traveling, or what the weather is like preventing you from getting to a physical office.
Therapy is not just for people with mental health issues or people with immediate problems they need to solve.
It’s a really fantastic way to become a better, more resilient person who can handle what life throws at them with grace and understanding and an emotional intelligence about themselves and those around them.
6. Adopt a New Attitude
Attitude is one of those things that can make or break our quest to get our lives together.
If you go around complaining about everything and how hard it is and how you’ll never be successful, you’re going to have a heck of a time trying to live your best life.
If, instead, you approach this journey with a positive attitude and a sense of kindness towards yourself and others, you’ll find it so much easier and you’ll find that more doors open for you.
It is often said that it is not the “thing” that makes us feel something, but our attitude towards that thing.
Two people could have the same challenges, but have two very different experience of those challenges because of their attitude.
